GGN Research sees India Feb edible oil imports at 1.29 mln tn, down 2% on month

MUMBAI – India's edible oil imports in February are estimated at a three-month low of 1.29 million tonnes, down 2% on month, as imports of sunflower oil declined, according to GGN Research. However, on a year-on-year basis, imports of edible oil in February are estimated to have risen 34%.
India's palm oil imports are estimated to have risen to a six-month high of 846,000 tonnes in February, up 10% from the previous month, and up by a whopping 126% from last year, according to GGN Research. Soyoil imports likely rose 7% on month and 5% on year to 299,000 tonnes in February, Rajesh Patel, managing partner at GGN Research, told Informist.
On the other hand, sunflower oil imports in February are estimated at a three-month low of 145,000 tonnes, down 45% month-on-month and 36% year-on-year, according to the agricultural intelligence firm.
In January, the country had imported 1.31 million tonnes of edible oil, with total vegetable oil imports at 1.34 million tonnes, according to data from The Solvent Extractors' Association of India. During Nov-Jan, total vegetable oil imports were at 3.96 million tonnes, down from 4.05 million tonnes a year ago, the association said.
As of Mar. 1, vessels carrying a total of 275,000 tonnes of edible oil are in line to arrive or discharge at Indian ports in the next few days. Of the total, 140,000 tonnes are palm oil, 110,000 tonnes soyoil, and 25,000 tonnes sunflower oil, according to GGN Research.
In February, Nepal's edible oils imports through Indian ports are estimated at 98,000 tonnes, comprising 74,000 tonnes of soyoil, 5,000 tonnes of palm oil and 19,000 tonnes of sunflower oil, GGN Research said. "As per our estimates, India's import of edible oils from Nepal in February may be around 70,000 tonnes, which is not included in the total import figures," Patel said. End
