NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of all the spices fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Monday weighed down by rising arrivals of the fresh crop. Rising hostilities in West Asia may negatively impact the overall spices segment due to likely disruption in supply because of closure of the Strait of Hormuz, according to analysts.

At 1612 IST, the most-active April contract of TURMERIC was down 3.5% at INR 14,970 per 100 kilograms, because of rise in arrivals of the fresh crop in the coming weeks. Arrival are expected to increase after Holi, which may keep prices under pressure in the near term, SMC Global Securities said in a report.

"Market participants remain cautious amid rising supply expectations, with arrivals increasing by around 5% week-on-week to 12,723 tonnes compared with 12,159 tonnes last year," the brokerage firm added.

However, lower carry-forward stocks are likely to limit the downside. Kedia Advisory sees the immediate support at INR 14,942, and immediate resistance at INR 15,750. A sustained rise above this level could push prices toward INR 16,018 per 100 kilograms.

The most-active March contract of JEERA was down 2% at INR 21,700 per 100 kg, as rising arrivals of the new crop in some markets and a sharp decline in spot prices weighed on futures prices. Moreover, bulk buyers have delayed their purchases and adopted a wait-and-watch mode, anticipating further price corrections.

Subdued exports, comfortable stocks, and expectations of arrivals of fresh crop gaining momentum from March are seen weighing on prices. However, reports of infestation across key growing regions in Rajasthan may offer some support. Kedia Advisory said.

At 1533 IST, the most-active April contract of CORIANDER was down 1% at INR 11,262 per 100 kg, as rising arrivals weighed on prices. However, demand ahead of Holi and for the ongoing Ramadan is seen to partly offsetting supply pressures in the coming days.

However, arrivals are expected to increase after Holi and wedding-related demand is seen easing from mid-March, which may exert further pressure on prices, SMC Global said.
