MUMBAI – Prices of wheat showed mixed trends, those of maize rose, while those of rice were steady in key spot markets across the country on Monday, traders said. Prices of wheat fell in some markets amid a rise in new arrivals and due to weak demand, while they rose in others due to a slowdown in arrivals ahead of Holi, they said. Prices of maize rose due to a fall in arrivals, they said. Prices of basmati rice are expected to fall in the near term due to a halt in exports following hostilities in West Asia, they said.
WHEAT prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell INR 100 per 100 kg from Friday to INR 2,460 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices were weighed down by a rise in arrivals of the new rabi crop amid muted demand, he said. Most market participants stayed away ahead of Holi, but many farmers offloaded their stocks on Monday as they will stay away from markets for the next two days due to festivities, he said. Though some of the new arrivals have a high moisture content, the "overall quality" is good, he said. Prices are likely to remain under pressure in the near term, he said.
Prices of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, rose INR 150 per 100 kg from Friday to INR 2,375-INR 2,450, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals fell 2,500 bags to 2,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices rose due to a slowdown in arrivals, he said. Arrivals of the old stock have declined significantly, while arrivals of the new rabi crop have not increased yet, he said. Prices are expected to show mixed trends in the first half of this week as some farmers, millers, and traders are likely to remain active through Holi while others will choose to stay away, he said.
Wheat prices in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader. Prices were steady amid tepid market activity, he said.
MAIZE prices in Indore rose INR 25 from Friday to INR 1,715 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices rose as the market did not receive any arrivals, with most farmers preferring to offload their stocks of wheat or oilseeds instead of maize before staying away for Holi, he said. Prices are expected to fall in the near term once new rabi crop arrivals begin in full swing, he said.
Prices of the main varieties of RICE remained unchanged in Vashi. The 1401 and 1121 varieties of basmati rice were steady at INR 8,000-INR 8,200 per 100 kg and INR 8,400-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, respectively, Vora said. Prices of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety, were also steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said Ravi Shankar, a local trader.
Prices of basmati rice are expected to fall in the near term as hostilities in West Asia have brought exports of the Indian grain to a halt, market participants said. West Asia is a major destination for Indian basmati rice. Exports to Europe are also likely to be impacted as most shipments travel through the Red Sea, Suez Canal, and the Strait of Hormuz, which are located in the region of conflict, they said. End
