India's sugar output as of Sat rises 12% YoY to 24.6 mln tn, says federation

MUMBAI – So far in the sugar season that started in October, mills in India have produced 24.6 million tonnes of the sweetener as of Saturday, up nearly 12% from 22.0 million tonnes produced in the same period a year ago, according to data from the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories. The sugar production has risen due to higher sugarcane yield and improvement in recovery rate to 9.44% from 9.20% last year.
As of Saturday, 288 mills were operational across the country, as against 347 units last year. The 2025–26 (Oct-Sept) sugar season has commenced on a strong footing due to early crushing operations and improved yield, the federation had said earlier.
According to the state-wise details provided by the federation, sugar production in Uttar Pradesh as of Saturday was 7.4 million tonnes, up over 2% from 7.2 million tonnes at the same time last year, even though sugarcane crushing decreased to 73.7 million tonnes from 76.6 million tonnes a year ago. Operational mills in the state were 102, lower than 107 mills that were operating last year. The average sugar recovery rose to 10.05% from 9.45% last year.
Sugar production in Maharashtra surged over 27% to 9.5 million tonnes as of Saturday from 7.5 million tonnes last year. The state's production rose as sugarcane crushing jumped to 100.7 million tonnes from 80.1 million tonnes and the sugar recovery rate rose to 9.45% from 9.35%. The state had 80 mills running as of Saturday compared with 106 mills last year.
In Karnataka, sugar production stood at 4.4 million tonnes, up from 3.8 million tonnes last year. As of Saturday, 21 mills were running in the state against 27 mills last year. The average sugar recovery in the state rose to 8.55% from 8.50% last year. End
