NEW DELHI – The government has raised the March sugar sales quota for Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh, but reduced it for Maharashtra, according to a release by the Department of Food and Public Distribution on Friday. The quota for Karnataka in March is 16.7% higher on month at 383,073 tonnes, and for Uttar Pradesh it is up 6.7% on month at 755,196 tonnes. On the other hand, the sales quota for Maharashtra is 13.2% lower than the previous month at 812,198 tonnes, according to the release.
The Centre has set the all-India domestic sugar sales quota for March at 2.25 million tonnes, unchanged from last month but 2.2% lower than the 2.30 million tonnes in March 2025.
Market participants had expected the sales quota to be higher at around 2.30 million-2.35 million tonnes amid warmer temperatures and festivals next month. Demand from bulk buyers such as confectionery, cold-drink, and ice-cream manufacturers is expected to increase as temperatures rise and festivals such as Holi and Eid approach.
The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers. It also sets the monthly sales quota for each sugar mill.
The following table details the major state-wise allocation of sugar sales limits for March, with the month-ago level, and the month-on-month change in percentage:
