MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in key markets in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra were steady as buying interest was limited, traders said. Demand is likely to rise in the days to come, mostly from bulk consumers, they said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady as there was limited demand at higher rates, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. In the resale market, prices fell by INR 5 per 100 kg, he said. Prices may rise in the coming days owing to lower-than-expected quota amid high demand during summers from ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers, he said.

But the gains will not last long as sugar output in the state has increased. Sugar output in Uttar Pradesh during the season rose nearly 4% on year to 6.6 million tonnes as of Feb. 14, according to the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories.

In Maharashtra, mills kept prices steady after raising rates the previous day, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Kuvadia said there was little demand at the higher levels. Prices are likely to increase in the coming days by INR 10-INR 20 per 100 kg owing to the lower-than-expected sales quota for March, he said.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 3,900-INR 4,045 per 100 kg in West Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,900-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in Central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,810-INR 3,825 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,995-INR 4,066 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1754 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were steady at 14.40 cents per pound.  End

US$1 = INR 90.97
