MUMBAI – Prices of tur and masur were steady, while those of chana were mixed in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of chana fell in some markets amid arrivals of the new crop while these remained unchanged in others as demand matched supply, they said. Prices of tur were steady due to tepid market activity, while those of masur were unchanged amid an absence of new cues, they said.
CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,650 per 100 kg, said Raja Jain, a local trader. Prices were steady as demand for the legume was on par with supply, he said. "Buyers are purchasing whatever is coming into the market," he said. Arrivals of the new rabi crop from Madhya Pradesh have begun in small quantities, which are being purchased by millers to fulfil their need-based demand, he said. New crop arrivals in the state are expected to begin in full swing after the first week of March, he said. Arrivals of the new crop in Maharashtra and Karnataka have already increased, he said.
Prices are likely to fall once robust arrivals begin from all key chana-producing states, Jain said. With higher production of chana expected this year, prices could remain under the minimum support price of INR 5,875 per 100 kg, prompting many farmers to sell their stock to the government, he said. "This year the market prices are not that great, so I expect a lot of farmers will turn to the government instead," he said. As such, the government's procurement is expected to support prices at lower levels, Jain said. The government has approved the procurement of 2.31 million tonnes of chana in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
Prices of chana in Delhi fell INR 25 from Thursday to INR 5,600-INR 5,625 per 100 kg amid a rise in arrivals of the new rabi crop, traders said.
TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 8,100-INR 8,125 per 100 kg, said Ashok Gupta, a local trader. Prices are unchanged amid low market activity, he said. Currently, millers are making only hand-to-mouth purchases, while arrivals of the new crop have also decreased, he said. "There were fewer arrivals overall today (Friday) as most farmers stayed away from markets ahead of Holi," he said.
Arrivals of the new crop from Maharashtra are expected to rise again after the first week of March, which could weigh on prices, Gupta said. However, new crop arrivals from Karnataka have already begun to decline, so a steep fall in prices will be unlikely, he said.
Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 8,100-INR 8,200 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,650 per 100 kg, Jain said. Prices were unchanged due to a lack of fresh cues, he said. The market has begun receiving small quantities of new crop arrivals, he said. Prices are expected to fall further as arrivals are likely to increase by mid-March, he said. With prices already ruling below the minimum support price of INR 7,000 per 100 kg, most of the crop is likely to be purchased by the government, which could support prices in the medium term, he said. The government has approved the procurement of 601,000 tonnes of masur in Madhya Pradesh.
Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, remained steady at INR 5,500-INR 6,000 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of the choti variety were also steady at INR 6,500-INR 7,100 per 100 kg. End
