MUMBAI – Prices of wheat were mixed in key spot markets across the country, while those of rice and maize were unchanged, traders said. Wheat prices rose slightly in some markets amid limited arrivals of better-quality wheat, they said. Maize prices remained steady amid low market activity.

WHEAT prices in Kota, Rajasthan, rose by INR 20 per 100 kilograms from Thursday to INR 2,250-INR 2,300, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals rose by 500 bags to 4,500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices rose slightly amid arrivals of better-quality newly harvested rabi crop, he said. "We have been mostly receiving low to average quality new arrivals, but today some bags (of wheat) were of good quality, so sellers took advantage of the scarcity and increased prices," he said. The market has begun receiving some arrivals of the new crop, but most are moisture-laden, which lowers quality, he said. "The lower quality stocks are sold at lower prices," he said.

In the past few weeks, several parts of north India, including Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh, recorded a spell of showers, accompanied by occasional hailstorms. This has damaged some of the standing crops in these states, thereby exposing them to moisture, Mehta said. The standing crop was also hit by gusty winds, resulting in kernels dropping to the ground, he said. While the dropped grain is still fit for human consumption, it has been exposed to dirt and hence is of lower quality, he said.

Wheat prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 2,560 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices were steady amid low market activity, as most buyers are waiting for arrivals to increase, he said. Buyers prefer the new rabi stock over the old one, and are looking for prices to fall further under arrival pressure, he said.

Wheat prices in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader. Prices were steady amid tepid market activity, he said.

MAIZE prices in Indore were unchanged at INR 1,690 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices were steady as the market is awaiting an increase in new arrivals, he said. The market has begun receiving the new rabi crop in small quantities, he said. New arrivals are expected to rise steadily in March, and prices will come under pressure by April, he said.

Maize prices in Davangere, Karnataka, were unavailable as the market was shut for Jatre, or local temple festivals, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. The market will reopen on Monday, he said.

Prices of the main varieties of RICE remained unchanged in Vashi. The 1401 and 1121 varieties of basmati rice were steady at INR 8,000-INR 8,200 per 100 kg and INR 8,400-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, respectively, Vora said. Prices are steady amid stable demand for both basmati and non-basmati rice varieties, he said. Basmati exports continue smoothly, while demand for non-basmati rice remains firm across India, he said.

Prices of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety, were also steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said Ravi Shankar, a local trader. Prices are likely to remain steady in the near term due to seasonally low demand, he said.  End
