Andhra Pradesh rabi area up 36% on yr at 2.49 mln ha as of Wed

MUMBAI – The area sown under rabi crops in Andhra Pradesh progressed to 2.49 million hectares as of Wednesday, up over 36% from 1.83 million hectares covered in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The ongoing rabi acreage has surpassed the season's normal of 2.07 million hectares.
Paddy acreage increased to 848,000 hectares from 651,000 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area sown under maize also rose to 437,000 hectares from 178,000 hectares a year ago, and that under jowar was up at 100,000 hectares from 74,000 hectares last year.
The area sown under chana was 372,000 hectares, up from 300,000 hectares sown last year, according to the report. The acreage under urad rose to 312,000 hectares from 276,000 hectares a year ago, while that under moong rose to 73,000 hectares from 55,000 hectares last year. The area sown under all rabi pulses so far was 844,000 hectares, up from 731,000 hectares a year ago.
The total area sown under all oilseeds was 121,000 hectares, up from 66,000 hectares covered in the previous year, the report showed. Groundnut acreage was up at 84,000 hectares from 51,000 hectares last year.
Tobacco acreage in the state fell to 105,000 hectares from 119,000 hectares a year ago, according to the report. Cotton acreage was up at 14,000 hectares from 1,000 hectares last year.
From Oct. 1-Dec. 31, the state recorded 344 millimetres of rainfall during the ongoing northeast monsoon season, which is 20% above the normal for the period, the report showed. From Jan. 1-Feb. 25, it recorded 2.7 millimetres of rainfall, 82% below normal for the period.
The water level in reservoirs across Andhra Pradesh was 59.2% of the live storage capacity as of Friday, compared to 52% a year ago, according to data from the state's water resources department. End
