MUMBAI – The maximum temperature in Mumbai is expected to exceed 35 degrees Celsius next week, marking a progression into a hotter and more humid pre-monsoon season, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. Mumbai recorded near-normal temperatures for most of February, with a few instances of temperatures breaching the 35-degree Celsius mark, the weather agency said.

 

Day temperatures over the Konkan coast, including Mumbai, are largely controlled by the timing of the sea breeze. If the sea breeze gets delayed beyond noon, temperatures rise above 35 degrees Celsius during this time of the year, the weather agency said. Typically, the formation of a cyclonic circulation over northeast Arabian Sea, off the south Gujarat and the Konkan coasts, leads to winds streaming from the sea over the city earlier in the day.

 

However, an anticyclonic circulation is expected to form over south Rajasthan and north Gujarat at the start of next week. This will strengthen the land winds along the Konkan coast for longer durations, delaying the onset of the sea breeze beyond 1300 IST, the weather agency said. As such, the landmass in north and central Gujarat, south Rajasthan, and north central Maharashtra is heating up.

 

On account of this seasonal progression, March in Mumbai will be hotter than February by about 3 degrees Celsius, keeping temperatures above normal during both day and night, the agency said.  End
