Global alumina production down 3% on month Jan, says aluminium institute

MUMBAI – Global alumina production fell over 3% on month to 13.09 million tonnes in January, according to data from the International Aluminium Institute. On a yearly basis, alumina production was up 1% from 12.95 million tonnes.
The average daily global alumina production fell to 422,400 tonnes in January from the revised 437,600 tonnes in December, as per the data. Alumina production in China fell to 7.86 million tonnes in January from 8.17 million tonnes in December. The country's output, which accounts for 60% of global alumina production, was up over 2% from a year ago, the data showed.
In the Oceania region, alumina output fell nearly 4% on month to 1.48 million tonnes in January. In Africa and Asia, excluding China, alumina production fell nearly 2% on month to 1.35 million tonnes. In Europe, including Russia, production fell 57,000 tonnes from last month to 583,000 tonnes in January and the output in South America fell 28,000 tonnes from December to 1.01 million tonnes, the data showed.
According to the International Aluminium Institute, global production of primary aluminium rose nearly 0.3% on month to 6.32 million tonnes in January. At 1010 IST, the most active March aluminium contract on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India was up 0.2% at INR 312.75 per kg. On the London Metal Exchange, the three-month aluminium contract was down 0.5% at $3,142.50 per tonne. End
