MUMBAI – Production of crude steel in India rose nearly 11% on year to 15.1 million tonnes in January, according to data from the World Steel Association. India accounted for more than 10% of global steel output in the month. Global crude steel output in January fell around 7% on year to 147.3 million tonnes.

Among the top 10 steel producers, India, the US, South Korea, Turkey, Germany, and Iran reported an on-year rise in output while China, Japan, Russia, and Brazil reported a fall. China, the world's largest steel producer, reported an output of 75.3 million tonnes in January, down around 14% on year. Still, it accounted for over 51% of global production.

In Japan, crude steel output fell nearly 1% on year to 6.8 million tonnes in January. Production in Russia is estimated to have fallen over 7% to 5.5 million tonnes. The US produced 7.1 million tonnes of steel in January, up over 3% on year. Steel output in Turkey was up nearly 6% on year at 3.4 million tonnes. Crude steel production in Germany rose 15% to 3.1 million tonnes in January. Crude steel production in Brazil fell 1.4% on year to 2.7 million tonnes. Production in Iran rose over 15% on year to 2.6 million tonnes.  End
