MUMBAI – Prices of wheat fell in most key spot markets, while those of rice and maize were steady, traders said. Wheat prices fell in most markets due to low demand amid a rise in arrivals of the new rabi crop, they said. Wheat prices are likely to fall more as new crop arrivals pick up pace, they said. Maize prices were unchanged due to low market activity, they said.

WHEAT prices in Kota, Rajasthan, fell INR 100 per 100 kilograms Thursday to INR 2,250-INR 2,280, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals fell 1,000 bags to 4,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices are weighed down by sluggish demand for old wheat stocks, he said. Traders are not keen to buy old stocks and are waiting for prices to go down once new arrivals pick up pace, he said.

Arrivals of the new rabi crop have begun in Rajasthan, with the Kota market receiving 1,200 bags of the freshly harvested crop Thursday, Mehta said. Arrivals of the new crop, which have a higher moisture content, are priced at INR 1,700-INR 2,000 per 100 kg, he said. "The market got 1,200 bags of the new crop, which is nothing — arrivals will increase in the next few weeks, and then prices will be weighed down," he said.

Prices of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell INR 20 per 100 kilograms from Wednesday to INR 2,560 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices were weighed down by low demand and a rise in arrivals of the new crop in Madhya Pradesh, he said. Prices are expected to fall further as robust arrivals of the new crop are expected in the near term, he said.

Wheat prices in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader. Prices were steady amid low market activity, he said.

MAIZE prices in Indore were unchanged at INR 1,690 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices were steady as the market was awaiting the new arrivals to increase, he said. Arrivals of the new rabi maize crop are expected to increase by mid-March, he said. Maize prices in Davangere, Karnataka, were unavailable as the market was shut for Jatre, or local temple festivals, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. The market will reopen on Monday, he said.

Prices of the main varieties of RICE remained unchanged in Vashi. The 1401 and 1121 varieties of basmati rice were steady at INR 8,000-INR 8,200 per 100 kg and INR 8,400-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, respectively, Vora said. Prices are unchanged amid stable demand for basmati rice, Mehta said. "Ever since the government reopened exports last year, demand for Indian basmati rice has been stable, keeping prices here largely steady," he said.

Prices of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety, were also steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said Ravi Shankar, a local trader. Prices are likely to remain steady in the near term due to seasonally low demand, he said.  End
