MUMBAI – Prices of chana and masur were steady Thursday while the prices of different varieties of tur showed a mixed trend in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Chana prices were unchanged amid low market activity, while prices of masur were steady due to lack of fresh cues, they said. Prices of the new tur crop were unchanged amid steady need-based demand, while those of the old tur crop fell due to low demand, they said.
CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,575-INR 5,600 per 100 kg, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader. Prices are steady amid tepid market activity, he said. Though arrivals of the new rabi crop have begun in small amounts, demand is largely limited to need-based purchases by millers, he said. Once new crop arrivals begin in full swing, prices could buckle under pressure initially, before finding support on demand from stockists and traders, he said.
Even then, a steep rise in prices is unlikely as most stockists won't purchase a large amount of the new crop this year, Mangal said. "Everyone knows there is ample supply this year because of a rise in domestic production and the availability of imports, which is why they (stockists) won't be able to make profits--so, they will buy less," he said. The government's procurement of the legume is also expected to support prices at lower levels, he said.
The government has approved the procurement of 2.31 million tonnes of chana under the price support scheme for the rabi marketing season 2026-27 (Oct-Sept). The legume will be purchased at the minimum support price of INR 5,875 per 100 kg.
Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,626-INR 5,650 per 100 kg, traders said.
Prices of new TUR crop in Solapur, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 7,500-INR 8,250 per 100 kg, while prices of old tur fell by INR 100 from the previous day to INR 7,200-INR 7,750 per 100 kg, said Rahul Srinivas, a local trader. About 25–28 trucks with 20,000–25,000 kg each of new tur, and only three to four trucks with old tur stock arrived in the market, he said.
Prices of new tur were steady amid stable demand, while prices of tur fell on lower demand, Srinivas said. "There is overall low demand, and those who are making need-based purchases prefer the new stock over the older one," he said. Prices of old tur are expected to fall further as supply of the older stock declines, he said. Prices of new tur could remain range-bound in the near term, he said.
Arrivals of the new tur crop from Karnataka have decreased, while those from Maharashtra are expected to decline in the near term, he said. Prices are expected to rise after 15–20 days as demand from millers is expected to increase amid lower arrivals of the new tur crop, he said.
Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 8,100-INR 8,200 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,650 per 100 kg, Mangal said. Prices were unchanged due to lack of cues, he said. Robust arrivals of the new masur crop are expected to begin in the first week of March, he said. With prices already below the minimum support price of INR 7,000 per 100 kg, the government is expected to begin procurement soon, he said. Prices are likely to rise by INR 300–INR 400 per 100 kg once the government begins buying the legume, he said. The government has sanctioned the purchase of 601,000 tonnes of masur in Madhya Pradesh.
Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, remained steady at INR 5,500-INR 6,125 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of the choti variety in Lalitpur were also steady at INR 6,800-INR 7,300 per 100 kg. End
