MUMBAI – The onset of the pre-monsoon season has begun earlier than usual over Tamil Nadu and Kerala, with day temperatures in both states rising above-normal in the past few days, private weather agency Skymet said. Maximum temperatures in Erode, Tamil Nadu, have already breached the 37-degree Celsius mark a few times in February. Salem and Paramathi in Tamil Nadu and Kochi and Punalur in Kerala have registered maximum temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius in the past week, and this pattern is expected to continue in the next seven days, the weather agency said.

The north-south wind discontinuity over the interior of south India, which drives the weather conditions over the region, is a typical feature of the pre-monsoon season, the weather agency said. Currently, the wind discontinuity is marked extending from Vidarbha to the southern tip of the country, across interior Karnataka and Rayalaseema, and the border areas of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The feature is in the developing stage right now and is likely to become more marked during the first week of March, which is earlier than normal, the weather agency said.

The development of the wind discontinuity also leads to a shift of weather activities over the region. The wind discontinuity has an inbuilt characteristic of east-west oscillation. Currently, this discontinuity is displaced westward, closer to the interior parts of Kerala, away from the coast.

Under the combined influence of wind discontinuity and cyclonic circulation over southeast Arabian Sea, scattered rain and thundershowers are likely over Kerala in the next four days, the weather agency said. The intensity will be mild to moderate and the spread will be isolated to scattered places. As such, Kerala is the only state which is likely to witness weather activity during the remaining days of February, the agency said.  End
