Telangana rabi acreage up 11% on yr at 7.63 mln acres as of Wed

MUMBAI – Farmers in Telangana have sown rabi crops across 7.63 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares) as of Wednesday, up nearly 11% from 6.90 million acres sown in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The acreage so far has surpassed the state's normal rabi area of 6.87 million acres.

 

The area sown under paddy rose to 5.65 million acres from 5.32 million acres a year ago, the report showed. Maize acreage in the state was up at 1.14 million acres from 744,388 acres last year, while that of jowar also rose to 298,408 acres from 210,454 acres a year ago.

 

Chana acreage so far slipped to 186,804 acres from 219,336 acres sown a year ago, according to the report. The area sown under urad fell to 36,331 acres from 42,718 acres a year ago, and that of moong was also down at 7,095 acres from 9,432 acres last year. The total area sown under all rabi pulses was 237,993 acres, down from 282,265 acres a year ago.

 

The total area sown under all oilseeds in the state was 231,050 acres, down from 280,618 acres covered in the previous year, the report showed. Groundnut acreage fell to 192,505 acres from 235,759 acres a year ago. The area sown under sesame was down at 11,761 acres from 18,598 acres last year.

 

Tobacco acreage fell to 11,000 acres from 14,606 acres a year ago, while sugarcane acreage rose to 17,273 acres from 10,218 acres last year, the report showed.

 

During northeast monsoon, which spans from Oct. 1-Dec. 31, the state received 189.6 millimetres of rainfall, 72% above normal for the period. From Jan. 1–Feb. 25, the state recorded a 50% deficit in rainfall, the report said. "The good rainfall received across the State is expected to facilitate favourable soil moisture conditions, leading to improved crop coverage during the current Yasangi (rabi) season," it said.

 

The water level in reservoirs across Telangana was 592.73 billion cubic metres as of Wednesday, compared with 522.62 billion cubic metres a year ago, according to the report.  End
