NEW DELHI – The government has set the domestic sugar sales quota for March at 2.25 million tonnes, the Department of Food and Public Distribution said in a post on social media platform X. The quota for next month is 2.2% lower than the 2.30 million tonnes in March 2025 but unchanged from last month.

Market participants had expected sales quota to be higher around 2.30 million-2.35 million tonnes with warmer temperatures and festivals next month. Demand from bulk buyers such as confectionery, cold-drink, and ice-cream manufacturers is expected to rise with rising temperatures and festivals such as Holi and Eid.

The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers. It also sets the monthly sales quota for each sugar mill.

The Indian Sugar Mills & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association has estimated gross sugar production to rise 9.5% on year to 32.4 million tonnes in the current sugar season ending September, with 3.1 million tonnes of sucrose or sugar estimated to be diverted for ethanol production.

The net sugar production is projected at 29.3 million tonnes, up from 26.1 million tonnes last year. The country requires about 28.0 million-28.5 million tonnes of sugar for consumption.  End
