MUMBAI – A rise in gold futures contracts pulled up spot gold prices Wednesday as global trade uncertainties and rising geopolitical risks increased the safe haven appeal of the yellow metal, traders said.

In Mumbai, the spot price of gold of 99.9% purity opened at INR 159,823 per 10 grams, up from INR 159,241 at Tuesday's close, said Kumar Jain, spokesperson for India Bullion and Jewellers Association. Traders are offering a discount of INR 4,500 per 10 grams, he said.

Gold prices are experiencing a powerful resurgence as a "perfect storm" of global trade wars and intensifying geopolitical risks are driving a massive flight to safety, said Kedia Advisory in a note. "The primary catalyst is the implementation of a 10% universal US tariff, with threats to increase it to 15% soon. Coupled with a military buildup in the West Asia ahead of critical US-Iran nuclear talks, investors are aggressively hedging against global instability. With the Chinese markets reopening and central banks continuing their 15-month buying streak, gold's upward trajectory appears firmly supported," it said.

After the US Supreme Court struck down most tariffs imposed by him in 2025, President Donald Trump imposed a baseline 10% tariff on all US imports for 150 days which came into effect Tuesday. Trump also threatened to raise the baseline tariff to 15%, but is yet to sign an executive order to implement the higher rate. Earlier in the day, profit booking had brought the futures prices down, observers said.

"The tariff developments, along with Europe signalling a pause in trade deal ratification and India delaying negotiations with Washington, have added another layer of uncertainty to global markets," Kedia Advisory said.  End
