MUMBAI – Delhi has recorded a surge in temperatures in February, with many instances of above-normal temperatures recorded during both the day and night, private weather agency Skymet said. Minimum temperatures in the city are likely to rise further next week, reaching the mid-teens, signalling an early end to winter. This will also mark an early start of pre-monsoon over the city, with warmer days and windy afternoons as a precursor, the weather agency said.
Maximum temperatures in the city have already breached the 30 degrees Celsius mark thrice during the month, with the highest at 31.6 degrees Celsius on Feb. 16, which was 6 degrees Celsius above normal, the weather agency said.
The absence of strong weather systems and persistently clear skies over north India have raised the temperatures over the last few days, the weather agency said. A feeble western disturbance is likely to form over the mountainous region in north India between Thursday and Friday. However, the northwestern plains are unlikely to be impacted by this weather system. A moderately strong western disturbance is expected to form between Mar. 2–4, but its influence may at best reach up to the foothills of northwest India, and Delhi's weather is unlikely to be affected, the agency said.
The absence of rainfall over the city has also raised temperatures over the region, the weather agency said. The city recorded a light spell of showers last week, after which dry weather has persisted, the agency said. "The city has gone on record to observe one of the driest February months with a minuscule monthly rainfall of 0.5 millimetres, against the normal of 21.5 millimetres," the agency said. End
