Govt approves procurement of rabi chana, masur, mustard from various states

MUMBAI – The government has approved the large-scale procurement of 2.31 million tonnes of chana, 601,000 tonnes of masur, and 1.51 million tonnes of mustard from various states under the price support scheme for the rabi marketing season 2026-27 (Oct-Sept), Agriculture Minister Shivaraj Singh Chouhan said, according to a release by the ministry on Wednesday.
The government has sanctioned the purchase of 761,250 tonnes of chana in Maharashtra, 413,250 tonnes in Gujarat, 580,000 tonnes in Madhya Pradesh, and 553,000 tonnes in Rajasthan. Chana is the largest legume, both in terms of production and acreage, grown during the rabi season. The minimum support price of the legume is INR 5,875 per 100 kg.
The farm minister also approved the purchase of 601,000 tonnes of masur in Madhya Pradesh. The minimum support price of masur for the ongoing rabi marketing season is INR 7,000 per 100 kg.
The government will also procure 1.38 million tonnes of mustard in Rajasthan and 133,000 tonnes in Gujarat. The minimum support price of the oilseed in the ongoing season is INR 6,200 per 100 kg.
The Self-Reliance in Pulses Mission will be implemented in a decisive manner to promote domestic production and ensure remunerative prices for farmers, the release quoted the farm minister as saying. Under this mission, by 2030-31, the entire quantity of tur, urad, and masur offered by pre-registered farmers will be procured through central nodal agencies. The mission will encourage farmers to expand the area under pulses cultivation, adopt improved technologies, and invest more confidently in quality inputs, the release quoted Chouhan as saying. He added that this will have a positive impact on soil health, crop diversification, and nutritional security, while also improving farmers' incomes over time, the release said. End
