MUMBAI – Mustard seed prices rose in the key spot markets despite bumper crop arrivals, as the new crop quality was better with higher oil content, traders said. Soybean prices were mixed, rising in Rajasthan's Kota but steady in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh.
MUSTARD seed prices in Jaipur, Rajasthan, rose INR 25 to INR 6,775-INR 6,800 per 100 kilograms due to the arrival of better-quality seeds with higher oil content. Prices rose despite bumper arrivals of new and old crops, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Mustard seed arrivals across the country were estimated at 500,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) of new crop and 50,000 bags of old crop, according to GGN Research. Arrivals of new crops on Monday were at 450,000 bags. Traders said anticipation of higher rabi output may cap any gains in prices. Rabi mustard acreage was 8.94 million hectares, up 3.2% from last year, according to agriculture ministry data.
In Kota, mustard seed prices rose by INR 100 to INR 6,700 per 100 kg due to demand from millers for good-quality seeds, according to Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader. The arrivals in the market were 15,000 bags, the same as the previous day, he said.
SOYBEAN prices in Ratlam were steady at INR 2,700-INR 5,500 per 100 kg, said Narendra Porwal, a local trader. Arrivals were at 2,800 bags (1 bag = 40 kg), unchanged from the previous day.
Soybean prices in Kota rose INR 100 to INR 5,301 per 100 kg due to lower arrivals, Sameriya said. Arrivals were 10,000 bags (1 bag = 40 kg), down 1,000 bags from the previous day.
GROUNDNUT prices in Ratlam were steady at INR 3,150-INR 8,050 per 100 kg, according to Porwal. Arrivals were steady at 3,600 bags (1 bag = 30 kg). Groundnut prices could increase in the near term due to concern over lower output, traders said.
