NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of all spices were up on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Tuesday after falling on Monday. Turmeric prices were up as arrivals were below normal, while jeera and coriander prices rose on lower sowing, pointing to tighter production prospects, analysts said.
At 1638 IST, the most-active April contract of TURMERIC was up 2.3% at INR 15,940 per 100 kilograms, supported by lower-than-normal arrivals and steady domestic as well as export demand, Kedia advisory said. Farmers and stockists have reportedly reduced their holdings, tightening near-term supplies, and lending strength to prices ahead of the new crop, the brokerage said. Prices are also getting support on reports of weather-related issues, including waterlogging, and disease in parts of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, have affected yields, with localised losses of 15–20%. Quality concerns such as rhizome rot remain in some low-lying areas as well have been reported, the brokerage said.
However, gains are seen capped as fresh arrivals in Erode, Tamil Nadu, are expected to pick up over the next couple of weeks, it said.
The most-active March contract of JEERA was up 0.1% at INR 22,745 per 100 kg, supported by lower sowing and concern over crop, Kedia Advisory said. In Gujarat, acreage has fallen 14.34% year on year to 408,000 hectares, marking one of the slowest sowing seasons in recent years, it said. Market participants are likely to adopt a wait-and-watch approach, preferring further price corrections before initiating fresh positions, SMC Global Securities said in a note.
However, gains are seen capped as arrivals of the new crop begin trickling into some markets. Prices are expected to "trade sideways" as arrivals gather momentum from March, SMC said.
The most-active April contract of CORIANDER was up 6% at INR 11,330 per 100 kg due to a drop in acreage as well as the low pace of arrivals, SMC Global said. Prices are also likely to move with an upward bias supported by wedding season demand, even as arrivals pick pace, the brokerage said. Production, according to SMC, is expected to remain largely unchanged from the previous year.
The following were the prices of the most-active spices contracts at the time of writing the report:
Contract | Exchange | Unit (kg) | Price (INR) | Change (INR) |
Coriander Apr | NCDEX | 100 | 11,330 | 640 |
Jeera Mar | NCDEX | 100 | 22,745 | 25 |
Turmeric Apr | NCDEX | 100 | 15,940 | 358 |
