IMD sees wet spell, thunderstorms in parts of central, south India till Thu

MUMBAI – Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely over parts of Vidarbha, Kerala, interior Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu till Wednesday, and over Chhattisgarh till Thursday due to the presence of multiple weather systems, according to the India Meteorological Department. Currently, an upper air cyclonic circulation lies over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north coastal Odisha. Another upper air cyclonic circulation lies over northeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Saurashtra and Kutch, while a third upper air cyclonic circulation lies over southeast Arabian Sea off the south Kerala coast.
The low pressure area over southwest and adjoining areas of central Bay of Bengal is likely to continue moving eastwards and gradually weaken in the next 24 hours, the weather department said.
A fresh feeble western disturbance is likely to begin affecting the western Himalayan region from Friday, the weather bureau said. Under its influence, light rainfall or snowfall is likely over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand on Friday and Saturday, the bureau said. Another fresh disturbance is also expected to affect the western Himalayan region from Monday, it said.
Dense fog conditions are expected to persist during the morning hours in parts of Punjab and Odisha till Wednesday, the weather department said.
Maximum temperatures over the plains of northwest India are likely to gradually rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the next seven days, the weather department said. Such a rise in temperatures is expected to keep maximum temperatures in the region above normal by 3–5 degrees Celsius, the department said.
In central and east India, maximum temperatures are expected to gradually rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the next four days, the weather bureau said. In Maharashtra, no significant change in maximum temperature is likely in the next two days, after which it is expected to gradually rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the subsequent five days, the bureau said. No significant change in maximum temperature is likely over the rest of the country, the bureau said.
In the past 24 hours, the maximum temperature in Jammu and Kashmir was "markedly" above normal by more than 6.5 degrees Celsius, and "appreciably" above normal by 3–5 degrees Celsius in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, west Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Vidarbha, Gangetic West Bengal, the weather department said. The highest maximum temperature of 37.8 degrees Celsius was recorded in Erode, Tamil Nadu, the department said. End
