India's imports of pulses down 4.5% on year at 6.57 mln tn in 2025

MUMBAI – India imported 6.57 million tonnes of pulses in 2025, down 4.5% from 6.88 million tonnes imported a year ago, according to data from the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics, as circulated Tuesday by India Pulses and Grains Association.
In 2025, India imported 1.58 million tonnes of chana, up a hefty 301% on year from 394,148 tonnes in 2024. In 2025, chana accounted for 24% of total import of pulses, as against mere 6% a year ago, according to the data.
Import of tur at 1.33 million tonnes was up 5% on year, and had a share of a little over 20% in 2025.
India's import of yellow peas at 1.29 million tonnes registered a significant fall of 56% on year, the data showed. In the overall import of pulses, yellow peas had a share of around 19% in 2025, a drastic fall from 43% a year ago, the data showed.
While urad's imports rose 40% on year to 1.07 million tonnes in 2025, those of masur were steady at 1.06 million tonnes. Imports of other pulses fell 48% on year to 242,777 tonnes in 2025. End
