Gujarat summer acreage up 8% on year at 194,722 ha as of Monday

MUMBAI – The area sown under summer crops in Gujarat increased to 194,722 hectares as of Monday, up over 8% from 179,740 hectares sown in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The normal acreage for the summer crop season, which is the average of the last three years, is 1.18 million hectares, of which nearly 17% has been covered.
Paddy acreage in the state slipped to 79,834 hectares from 82,443 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area sown under bajra was down at 19,491 hectares from 19,744 hectares last year, while that of maize rose to 2,291 hectares from 1,872 hectares a year ago.
The area sown under moong rose to 4,079 hectares from 3,473 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The acreage under urad was also up at 1,133 hectares from 370 hectares last year.
Groundnut acreage in the state so far was 9,629 hectares, up from 4,809 hectares last year, the report showed. The area sown under sesame also rose to 13,391 hectares from 6,837 hectares a year ago.
The area sown under vegetables rose to 20,143 hectares from 18,233 hectares a year ago. The area sown under onion, which is not included in the vegetable acreage, was 4,486 hectares, up from 464 hectares last year. Sugarcane acreage fell to 3,443 hectares from 5,095 hectares a year ago.
In Gujarat, summer crops are sown in February and March, and harvested in May and June. Bajra, paddy, sesame, and moong are the main crops grown in the state during the summer. End
