MUMBAI – The transition of the weather to warmer days of the pre-monsoon season over northwest India is expected to be earlier than normal, according to private weather forecasting agency Skymet. Similarly, there are signs of an early start to the transition from winter to pre-monsoon in the south and central India, with a wet spell expected over most parts of the region till early March.

Cold weather over the plains of northwest India usually lasts till the first few weeks of March, and the region is the last to heat up for the seasonal transition. However, night temperatures in several parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana have already risen to double digits, the weather agency said.

Typically, the presence of an active western disturbance brings cold air over northwest India, lowering the temperature over the region. However, in the absence of such weather systems, the transition to the warmer days of pre-monsoon is expected around Holi at the earliest, which is in the first week of March. The transition is likely to affect the mountains of northwest India first, after which low-level winds will become stronger and drier, warming up the rest of the region, the weather agency said.

In central, east, and south India, the presence of multiple weather systems over the region is likely to cause showers and thunderstorms over the region till the first week of March, the weather agency said. This marks an early start to pre-monsoon rainfall over the region. Many parts of the country usually begin receiving pre-monsoon showers only after March, it said.  End
