India summer crop acreage 2.1 mln ha as of Fri, up 5% on year

MUMBAI – The sowing of summer crops has commenced across India, with the acreage touching 2.1 million hectares as of Friday, up nearly 5% from 2.0 million hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, according to agriculture ministry data. The area under rice, the largest summer crop by both acreage and production, was at 1.8 million hectares as of Friday, unchanged from a year ago.

 

The area sown under all coarse cereals rose nearly 28% on year to 138,000 hectares, the data showed. The acreage under maize, the leading summer coarse cereal in terms of area and production, rose to 106,000 hectares from 89,000 hectares a year ago. The area under bajra was 12,000 hectares, down from 14,000 hectares at the same time last year.

 

The total area sown under pulses was 91,000 hectares, up 20% from the previous year. Moong acreage rose over 5% to 59,000 hectares, while that of urad rose to 25,000 hectares from 19,000 hectares last year. 

 

The total area sown under oilseeds rose 61% on year at 124,000 hectares, the data showed. The area under groundnut was 104,000 hectares, up from 60,000 hectares a year ago. The acreage under sesame was unchanged from a year ago at 12,000 hectares.

 

The normal acreage during the summer crop season, based on the average area covered from 2022-23 (Jul-Jun) to 2024-25, is 7.54 million hectares. The summer crop season in India runs between the rabi and kharif seasons, typically spanning from March to June.
