MUMBAI – Prices of wheat showed mixed trends while those of maize and rice were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Wheat prices were steady in some markets while they fell in most others due to sluggish demand amid arrivals of the new rabi crop, they said. Prices of maize were unchanged amid low market activity while prices of rice were steady owing to stable demand, they said.

WHEAT prices in Kota, Rajasthan, fell INR 20 per 100 kilograms from Friday to INR 2,360-INR 2,400 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 4,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices were weighed down by sluggish demand as most buyers are waiting for arrivals of the new wheat crop to begin in full swing, he said. "Most buyers don't care about the small quantities of old stock in the market now, everyone is making deals for the new arrivals," he said.

Arrivals of the new crop have begun in small quantities in some states such as Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, Mehta said. Prices are expected to fall once arrivals begin in full swing in the upcoming weeks, though a steep fall is unlikely as demand is also expected to rise, he said. The government's procurement of the staple grain at the minimum support price of INR 2,585 per 100 kg is also likely to support prices at the lower end of the range, he said.

Prices of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 20 from the previous week to INR 2,600 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices were weighed down by a slight rise in arrivals of the new wheat crop, he said. The price of wheat at the Vashi market in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, was steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader.

Prices of MAIZE in Indore were steady at INR 1,700 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices are steady due to poor market sentiment, he said. "The market will determine the price levels once arrivals of the new crop start properly," he said.

Prices of maize in Davangere, Karnataka, were also steady at INR 1,600–INR 1,800 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals fell by 500 bags to 3,000 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), he said. Prices are steady amid low market activity as buyers are waiting for more arrivals of the new rabi crop, he said. "Today we have received only one truck with new arrivals, but it will increase in the short term," he said.

Prices of the main varieties of RICE remained unchanged in Vashi. The 1401 and 1121 varieties of basmati rice were steady at INR 8,000-INR 8,200 per 100 kg and INR 8,400-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, respectively, Vora said. Prices are unchanged amid stable demand for both basmati and non-basmati varieties of rice, he said. "Currently there are steady exports of basmati rice to other countries while stable demand for non-basmati rice from within the country continues," he said.

Prices of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety, were also steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said Ravi Shankar, a local trader. Prices are likely to remain unchanged in the near term due to seasonally low demand, he said.  End
