--Commerce min: Noted US SC order on tariffs; studying its implications

MUMBAI – The Ministry of Commerce and Industry Saturday said it has taken note of the US Supreme Court ruling on tariffs and was studying the developments to understand their implications.

"We have noted the US Supreme Court judgement on tariffs yesterday (Friday)," the ministry said in a press release Saturday. "President Trump has also addressed a press conference in that regard. Some steps have been announced by the US Administration. We are studying all these developments for their implications."

Trump announced an additional 10% tariff on all countries under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 after the US Supreme Court Friday struck down most of his tariffs, noting that he exceeded his authority in imposing sweeping import duties on nearly all of Washington's trading partners.

Commenting about India-US trade agreement that was being finalised, at a press conference after announcing the additional duty on all countries, Trump said, "...nothing changes. They'll be paying tariffs and we will not be paying tariffs... the India deal is on."

Under the proposed India-US trade deal announced earlier this month, Washington had agreed to cut reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods to 18% and scrap the 25% punitive tariffs. The Trump administration had imposed a 25% reciprocal tariff on Indian goods and a 25% punitive tariff for New Delhi's energy ties with Russia.  End
