India's chana imports surge 300% on year in 2025; yellow pea plunges 56%

MUMBAI – India imported 1.58 million tonnes chana in 2025, over 300% higher than 394,148 tonnes imported a year earlier. On other hand, yellow pea imports plunged to 1.29 million tonnes in 2025 from 2.94 million tonnes a year ago, according to the commerce department data circulated by India Pulses and Grains Association.
In 2025, chana was imported mainly from Australia and Tanzania. With 1.42 million tonnes, Australia accounted for about 90% of India's total imports, whereas Tanzania had a share of more than 9% with 148,793 tonnes. India imported 3,936 tonnes of chana from Burma and a few other countries as well.
India imported 882,692 tonnes of yellow pea from Canada, which accounted for 68% of the total. Imports from Russia were 321,061 tonnes, with a share of nearly 25% of the total. India also imported yellow pea from Latvia, Argentina, and a few other countries in 2025. End
