MUMBAI – Prices of grains were unchanged in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Wheat prices were steady amid limited market activity, they said. While some of the crop has been damaged in north Indian states due to rainfall and gusty winds, it is unlikely to have any effect on prices due to ample availability of the grain, they said. Prices of maize were unchanged amid low market sentiment, while prices of rice were steady amid stable demand, they said. Prices of both wheat and maize are expected to fall once arrivals of the new rabi crop begin in full swing, they said.

WHEAT prices in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 2,380-INR 2,420 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 4,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices were steady due to tepid market activity, he said. Arrivals of the new crop have begun in small quantities in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, he said. Though there are some reports of crop damage in north Indian states, it is unlikely to affect expectations of a record output this year, he said.

Many north Indian states, such as Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana, recorded a continuous wet spell with gusty winds this week. "Strong winds in states such as Madhya Pradesh have knocked the developed wheat kernels off the standing stalks in the field," Mehta said, adding, "Now the dropped grains will be of lower quality as it would be dirtied and there will be some moisture content in them." With expectations of record output and ample carry-over stocks, the market is expected to shrug off these damages, he said.

Prices of MAIZE in Indore were steady at INR 1,700 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices were unchanged amid low market sentiment, with little to no demand, he said. Arrivals of the new crop have begun in small quantities, he said. Prices of maize in Davangere, Karnataka, were also steady at INR 1,600–INR 1,800 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 3,500 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), he said.

Prices of the main varieties of RICE remained unchanged in Vashi. The 1401 and 1121 varieties of basmati rice were steady at INR 8,000-INR 8,200 per 100 kg and INR 8,400-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, respectively, due to stable demand, he said. Prices are steady amid stable domestic and export demand, he said. "Demand for non-basmati varieties is stable as the government keeps the market in control with its steady disposal of the grain through various schemes. Ongoing demand for basmati rice from other countries is also keeping prices steady," he said.

Prices of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety, were also steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said Ravi Shankar, a local trader. Prices are likely to remain unchanged in the near term due to seasonally low demand, he said.  End
