MUMBAI – Prices of chana and tur rose Friday while prices of masur remained unchanged in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of chana rose due to reports of damage to the new rabi crop because of rainfall and hailstorms in northern states, they said. Tur prices rose due to rise in demand from stockists, they said. Prices of masur were unchanged due to lack of fresh cues, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 50 from Thursday to INR 5,600-INR 5,650 per 100 kg, said Raja Jain, a local trader. Prices rose due to reports of slight damage to the standing rabi crop in north Indian states such as Madhya Pradesh, he said. Many parts of north India have seen a continuous wet spell this week, which has disrupted crop harvesting and introduced moisture to the otherwise dry crop. Hailstorms in some parts of Rajasthan have also damaged the crop, he said.

However, this damage is unlikely to be worrisome, Jain said. "Rainfall and hailstorms have affected around 1–2% of the crop and there are still good quality arrivals of chana from other states such as Maharashtra," he said. The spell of showers is expected to be beneficial to the crop in many parts of north India, which recorded a deficit in winter rainfall this year, he said. Prices are likely to be range-bound in the near term as the market assesses the pace of new arrivals and need-based demand from millers continues, he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi rose by INR 50 from the previous day to INR 5,775-INR 5,800 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, rose by INR 50 from Thursday to INR 8,200-INR 8,225 per 100 kg, said Ashok Gupta, a local trader. Prices rose due to rise in demand from stockists, he said. With prices trading near the minimum support price of INR 8,000 per 100 kg, stockists are looking to purchase the legume in bulk before prices rise again, he said.

Though prices could be weighed down slightly as arrivals of the new crop continue over the next few weeks, a steep fall is unlikely as arrivals from Karnataka have already started to decline, Gupta said. New arrivals from Maharashtra are also expected to decrease sooner than expected due to lower production this year, he said. In the medium term, prices could rally as "India has not seen optimal tur production this year and even Myanmar's crop is less," he said. In India, many key tur-producing regions saw excessive rainfall in September and October, which impacted the crop. The new tur crop in Myanmar is also damaged, with lower shipments of the legume expected to arrive in India, he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 100 from the previous day to INR 8,300-INR 8,400 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,650 per 100 kg, Jain said. Prices were unchanged due to the absence of cues, he said. Arrivals of the new rabi masur crop have begun in small quantities, he said. Prices are expected to fall once new crop arrivals begin in full swing post Holi, which is in the first week of March, he said.

Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, remained steady at INR 5,500-INR 5,900 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of the choti variety also were steady at INR 6,600-INR 7,200 per 100 kg.  End
