Telangana rabi acreage up 8% on yr at 7.27 mln acres as of Wed

MUMBAI – The area sown under rabi crops in Telangana reached 7.27 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares) as of Wednesday, up over 8% from 6.71 million acres covered in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The acreage so far has surpassed the state's normal rabi area of 6.87 million acres.

 

Paddy acreage in the state was up at 5.39 million acres from 5.18 million acres, the report showed. The area sown under maize also rose to 1.12 million acres from 725,668 acres last year, and that of jowar was up at 241,807 acres from 193,385 acres a year ago.

 

The area sown under chana fell to 180,655 acres from 219,214 acres a year ago, according to the report. The acreage under urad slipped to 35,997 acres from 42,487 acres last year, while that under moong was also down at 7,000 acres from 8,135 acres a year ago. The total area sown under all rabi pulses was 231,046 acres, down from 279,722 acres last year.

 

The total area under all oilseeds so far was 226,840 acres, down from 272,031 acres in the previous year, the report showed. Groundnut acreage fell to 190,815 acres from 233,775 acres a year ago.

 

Tobacco acreage was down at 10,998 acres from 13,412 acres a year ago, according to the report. The area sown under sugarcane rose to 16,468 acres from 7,950 acres last year.

 

During northeast monsoon, which spans from Oct. 1-Dec. 31, the state received 189.6 millimetres of rainfall, 72% above normal for the period. From Jan. 1–Feb. 18, the state recorded a 99% deficit in rainfall, the report said. "The good rainfall received across the State is expected to facilitate favourable soil moisture conditions, leading to improved crop coverage during the current Yasangi (rabi) season," it said.

 

The water level in reservoirs across Telangana was 623.45 billion cubic metres as of Wednesday, compared with 548.70 billion cubic metres a year ago, according to the report.  End
