NEW DELHI – India's liquified natural gas imports rose 15.3% on year in January to 2.81 billion standard cubic metre, largely driven by higher consumption last month, according to data released by the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell. However, imports fell 5.5% on year during Apr-Jan to 28.93 billion standard cubic metres. 

 

India's natural gas import bill was unchanged on year at $1.1 billion in January but declined to $11.3 billion during Apr-Jan from $12.7 a year ago, the data showed. 

 

The country consumed 5.68 billion standard cubic metres of LNG in January, up 4.1% on year. Domestic production was only 2.91 billion standard cubic metres last month, down 5% on year, data showed. As demand outpaced production, the import dependence rose to 49.4% in January from 44.6% a year ago. 

 

During Apr-Jan, natural gas consumption declined 4.5% on year to 57.84 billion standard cubic metres and domestic production fell 3.6% on year to about 29.29 billion standard cubic metres. Import dependency during the period declined marginally to 50.0% from 50.6% a year ago. 

 

Meanwhile, natural gas production fell short of the January target at 3.128 billion standard cubic metres and the Apr-Jan target of around 30.44 billion standard cubic metres, data showed.  End
