Andhra Pradesh rabi area up 27% on yr at 2.28 mln ha as of Wed

MUMBAI – Sowing of rabi crops in Andhra Pradesh progressed to 2.28 million hectares as of Wednesday, up 27% from 1.80 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The current season's rabi sowing has surpassed the state's normal acreage of 2.07 million hectares for the season, the report showed.
Paddy acreage in the state rose to 787,000 hectares from 639,000 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area under maize was up at 378,000 hectares from 176,000 hectares, and that under jowar was 91,000 hectares, up from 73,000 hectares a year ago.
The area under chana was up at 349,000 hectares from 299,000 hectares sown a year ago, the report showed. Urad acreage rose to 296,000 hectares from 273,000 hectares, while the area under moong was up at 71,000 hectares from 55,000 hectares. The total area under all rabi pulses rose to 795,000 hectares from 725,000 hectares.
The total area under all oilseeds so far was 104,000 hectares, up from 65,000 hectares a year ago, according to the report. Groundnut acreage rose to 72,000 hectares from 51,000 hectares.
Tobacco acreage in the state fell to 95,000 hectares from 117,000 hectares, the report showed. The area under sugarcane was up at 11,000 hectares from 1,000 hectares a year ago.
From Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, the state recorded 344 millimetres of rainfall during the ongoing northeast monsoon season, which is 20% above the normal for the period, the report showed. From Jan. 1 to Feb. 18, it recorded 1.6 millimetres of rainfall, 88% below the normal for the period.
The water level in reservoirs across Andhra Pradesh was 62.1% of the live storage capacity as of Thursday, compared to 54.8% a year ago, according to data from the state's water resources department. End
