MUMBAI – India's oilmeal exports fell over 42% on year to 260,123 tonnes in January, according to data released by The Solvent Extractors' Association of India Wednesday. In Apr-Jan, the oilmeal exports were at 3.24 million tonnes, down from 3.60 million tonnes a year ago.
Exports of soymeal in January fell 54% to 132,440 tonnes from 286,287 tonnes a year ago. In Apr-Jan, soymeal exports were at 1.38 million tonnes, down from 1.77 million tonnes a year ago. Demand for Indian soymeal in global markets is poor with the commodity facing stiff competition from South American and North American producers. In the domestic market, soymeal is facing increased competition in the feed market from distillers' dried grains with solubles, the association had said earlier.
In the current kharif season, the Madhya Pradesh government introduced the Price Deficiency Payment Scheme for ensuring farmers receive at least the minimum selling price without physical procurement. "This scheme is well received and appreciated by the farmers as well as industry. Farmer received the difference of MSP & Market price while industry got the raw material at the market price which maintained the crushing and export of soybean meal. This was a win-win situation for the farmers and industry," the Solvent Extractors' Association said. "During current kharif season up to December, approximately 16 lakh tons (1.6 million tonnes) routed through this scheme," it said.
Exports of mustard meal fell nearly 51% on year to 64,782 tonnes in January. Exports of mustard meal during Apr-Jan fell to 1.50 million tonnes from 1.54 million tonnes a year ago. Exports of castorseed meal fell 16.5% on year to 26,467 tonnes in January, and fell over 11% on year during Apr-Jan to 228,739 tonnes, the association said.
Exports of groundnut meal fell nearly 60% on year to 1,067 tonnes in January, but were up over 40% on year at 24,081 tonnes in Apr-Jan. Increase in production of groundnut for the past two years has led to more crushing and export of groundnut meal during the period, the association said.
Exports of rice bran meal rose to 35,367 tonnes in January from 63 tonnes a year ago. In Apr-Jan, rice bran meal exports rose to 104,861 tonnes from 14,454 tonnes a year ago. The government has lifted the ban on export of de-oiled rice bran with effect from Oct. 3, 2025. In July 2023, the government had banned the export of de-oiled rice bran citing high domestic prices of cattle feed and milk products.
In Apr-Jan, a total of 556,041 tonnes of oilmeal were exported from the Kandla port in Gujarat, down from 1.26 million tonnes a year ago, the association said. However, exports from Mundra port, also in Gujarat, were at 1.21 tonnes, up from 801,564 tonnes a year ago, it said. In the same period, exports from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust in Navi Mumbai fell to 560,724 tonnes from 567,343 tonnes a year ago, the association said.
In Apr-Jan, India's oilmeal exports to Bangladesh fell over 46% to 333,597 tonnes from 621,265 tonnes in the same period last year, according to the data. During the same period, exports to South Korea fell over 47% on year to 315,549 tonnes. Oilmeal exports to Vietnam fell to 193,222 tonnes from 207,043 tonnes a year ago, as per the data.
China imported 718,176 tonnes of oilmeal from India during Apr-Jan, compared to just 31,105 tonnes in the corresponding period a year ago. The country's imports comprised 710,969 tonnes of rapeseed or mustard meal and 7,207 tonnes of castorseed meal. European countries were major importers of soybean meal from India, with Germany and France importing 178,741 tonnes and 122,596 tonnes, respectively, the association said.
The following table details exports of various oilmeals, in tonnes, in January and Apr-Jan, compared with the year-ago numbers, according to the latest data from SEA, with the year-on-year change in percentage terms:
