India summer crop acreage up 3% on yr at 1.52 mln ha as of Fri

MUMBAI – The sowing of summer crops has commenced across India, with the acreage under such crops reaching 1.52 million hectares as of Friday, up nearly 3% from 1.48 million hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, according to a report from the agriculture ministry. The area under rice, the country's largest summer crop by both acreage and production, was down nearly 3% on year at 1.28 million hectares.
The area sown under all coarse cereals rose 64% on year to 82,000 hectares, the report showed. The acreage under maize, the leading coarse cereal in terms of area and production during the summer crop season, rose to 63,000 hectares from 48,000 hectares last year. The area sown under bajra so far was 6,000 hectares against nil acreage at the same time last year.
The total area sown under all summer pulses was 58,000 hectares, up 16% from the previous year, according to the report. Moong acreage was unchanged on year at 44,000 hectares, while that of urad rose to 10,000 hectares from 5,000 hectares last year.
The total area sown under all oilseed crops was up nearly 68% on year at 99,000 hectares, the report showed. The area sown under groundnut was 87,000 hectares, up from 49,000 hectares a year ago. The acreage under sesame rose to 6,000 hectares from 5,000 hectares last year.
The normal acreage under the summer crop season, which is the average of the area covered from 2022-23 (Jul-Jun) to 2024-25, is 7.54 million hectares. The summer crop season in India runs between the rabi and kharif seasons, typically spanning from March to June.
