MUMBAI – Maximum temperatures over Mumbai and its suburbs are expected to rise further this week, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. The wind pattern over the city is likely to be adversely affected during the week, causing temperatures to frequently cross the 35-degree-Celsius threshold, the weather agency said. On Monday, the city recorded its highest temperature for the season at 35.2 degrees Celsius, which was around 4 degrees Celsius above normal, the agency said.

Currently, a cyclonic circulation lies over southwest Rajasthan, which is expected to stop northeasterly winds from reaching north Maharashtra and the Konkan region, the weather agency said. The shift in the anticyclone from Rajasthan will push more land winds for an extended duration over central Maharashtra and Konkan. Moreover, a low pressure area, which currently lies over south India, is likely to intensify into a depression and control the wind flow over the region. This weather system is likely to extend up to Maharashtra and the Konkan region, opposing the early onset of sea winds during the late morning and afternoon hours.

Such conditions are ideal for temperatures to rise along the Konkan coast, including Mumbai, the weather agency said. The head index is expected to remain in the higher range till Friday, the agency said. Mumbai is expected to experience hotter weather in March, it added.  End
