Gujarat summer acreage down 25% on year at 78,020 ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – Farmers in Gujarat have begun sowing for the summer crop or zaid season. As of Monday, the area sown under summer crops was 78,020 hectares, down over 25% from 104,703 hectares sown in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department.

 

The area sown under paddy was down at 52,331 hectares from 54,771 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Maize acreage was down at 355 hectares from 1,117 hectares last year.

 

Moong acreage fell to 1,000 hectares from 1,937 hectares sown last year, according to the report. The area sown under urad also fell to 85 hectares from 251 hectares a year ago.

 

The area sown under groundnut was 944 hectares, down from 2,488 hectares sown in the previous year, the report showed. Sesame acreage also fell to 2,744 hectares from 3,317 hectares last year.

 

Sugarcane acreage in the state was down at 1,647 hectares from 2,951 hectares covered last year, according to the report. The area sown under vegetables fell to 6,453 hectares from 9,976 hectares a year ago. The area sown under onion, which is not included in the vegetable acreage, was 104 hectares, down from 201 hectares last year. 

 

In Gujarat, summer crops are sown in February and March, and harvested in May and June. Bajra, paddy, sesame, and moong are the main crops grown in the state during the summer.  End
