RBI Malhotra asks MSMEs to pursue formalisation, maintain credit discipline

MUMBAI – Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra Monday asked micro, small, and medium enterprises to pursue formalisation, maintain credit discipline. The governor also asked them to adopt digital payments to build long-term resilience and competitiveness, the central bank said in a press release.

 

Deputy Governors T. Rabi Sankar, Swaminathan J., and S.C. Murmu also attended the meeting.

 

"In his remarks, the Governor underscored the pivotal role of the MSME sector in India's economic landscape contributing significantly to GDP, exports and livelihoods," the central bank said. "He emphasised that improving access to timely and adequate formal credit for MSMEs remains a key policy priority of the Reserve Bank."

 

The micro, small, and medium enterprises gave their feedback and suggestions to the RBI on policy issues and operational challenges related to credit flow to the sector, the central bank said.

 

Apparel Export Promotion Council Chairman A. Sakthivel asked the RBI for a separate export policy for the MSME sector. Sakthivel proposed that a dedicated Special Interest Package Scheme be introduced for MSMEs, the export promotion council said in a release.  End
