MUMBAI – Indian sugar mills exported 201,547 tonnes of sugar as of Jan. 31 in 2025-26 (Oct-Sept), the All India Sugar Trade Association said in a release. Out of the total dispatched quantity by mills to ports and Special Economic Zone refineries which was exported, 163,909 tonnes were white sugar and 37,638 tonnes were refined sugar, the sugar trade body said.

Indian sugar was exported to eight countries--the UAE, Afghanistan, Djibouti, Bhutan, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Somalia and Kenya, the trade body said. The UAE was the top importer of Indian sugar at 47,006 tonnes followed by Afghanistan, Djibouti and Bhutan, it said.

The association said that it welcomed an additional export quota for sugar during the current sugar season. The government has allowed export of an additional 500,000 tonnes sugar in 2025-26 (Oct-Sept) to sugar mills to facilitate higher sugar exports and help in managing surplus sugar availability in the country, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs said in a release on Friday. The additional export quantity will be made available to willing sugar mills only if they are able to export at least 70% of their allocated quantity by Jun. 30, according to the release.

Unlike the earlier 1.5 million tonnes quota, which was exchangeable with domestic quota of any other mill, the present additional quota cannot be swapped. The genuine exporting mills need not pay any premium to mills sitting idle on tradeable quota, according to the trade body.  End
