MUMBAI – Prices of wheat and rice showed mixed trends while prices of maize remained steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of wheat fell in some markets owing to a rise in arrivals of the new rabi crop, while they held steady in others, traders said. Prices of basmati rice rose owing to an increase in demand while prices of non-basmati varieties were unchanged. Maize prices were steady as demand for the grain matched supply, they said.

WHEAT prices at the Vashi market in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, fell INR 50 per 100 kilograms from Friday to INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader. Prices of the grain continued to fall owing to firm arrivals of the new rabi crop from Maharashtra, he said. Prices are likely to be under some pressure as robust arrivals are expected to continue, he said.

Prices of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 2,620 per 100 kg, said local trader Gaurav Kochar. Prices are steady amid a slight slowdown in arrivals of the new rabi wheat crop, he said. "There is no pressure of new arrivals at present," he said. Prices are likely to be weighed down by a rise in arrivals of the new crop in the near term, he said.

Prices of wheat were largely unaffected by the government's announcement Friday of opening up wheat exports, Kochar said. The highly anticipated move, which allows exports of Indian wheat after nearly four years, is ill-timed, most market participants said. "Indian wheat is much more expensive than global wheat, there is no price parity," Kochar said.

According to analysts, Indian wheat exports are priced anywhere between $280 per tonne and $300 per tonne, much higher than the prevailing global rate of $200-$270 per tonne. "In the best-case scenario, Indian wheat can be sold around the $290-$295 per tonne level," a commodity trader at an international trading company said.

The price of MAIZE in Indore was steady at INR 1,715 per 100 kg, Kochar said. The price is unchanged as demand for the coarse grain is on a par with supply, he said. Arrivals of the new rabi maize crop have begun in Madhya Pradesh in small quantities, he said. Prices are expected to be on a downtrend once arrivals of the new crop begin in full swing, he said.

Prices of maize at Davangere in Karnataka were steady at INR 1,700–INR 1,900 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals in the market were also unchanged at 5,000 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), he said.

Prices of different varieties of RICE in Vashi showed mixed trends, Vora said. The price of the 1401 variety of basmati rice rose INR 100 from Friday to INR 8,200-INR 8,300 per 100 kg and that of the 1121 variety rose INR 200 to INR 8,800-INR 9,000 per 100 kg, he said. Prices of basmati rice were supported by a rise in demand, he said. However, prices of non-basmati varieties of rice remained unchanged amid steady demand, he said.

Prices of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety, were steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said Ravi Shankar, a local trader. Prices are likely to remain unchanged in the near term owing to seasonally low demand, he said.  End
