MUMBAI – The government's move to allow export of wheat is aimed at stabilising local prices and supporting farmers amid a fall in prices at major mandis because of new crop arrivals, Kedia Advisory said in a note Monday.

The central government on Friday allowed the export of 2.5 million tonnes of wheat and another 500,000 tonnes of wheat products, over and above the 500,000 tonnes announced on Jan. 16. India had curbed wheat exports in May 2022.

As the new crop of wheat has started arriving in markets, prices have slipped below the MSP in some regions, while stocks remain comfortable, the note said. For the 2026-27 rabi marketing season, the government has set the minimum support price at INR 2,585 per 100 kg, up INR 160 per 100 kg from the previous year.

According to official data, the all-India average mandi price has declined to INR 2,527 per 100 kg in early February, below the MSP. States such as Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh have seen sharper monthly corrections due to higher arrivals, the note said.

Stocks of wheat are also comfortable. According to official figures, wheat stocks with private trade entities are pegged around 7.5 million tonnes, up from 3.2 million tonnes a year ago. The closing stock of wheat with Food Corp. of India is projected at 18.2 million tonnes as of Apr. 1, up from 11.8 million tonnes a year ago.

The current area under wheat is 33.4 million hectares, up 1.9% on year, raising expectations of a record level of wheat production.  End
