--Cabinet OKs INR 186.62 bln for Gohpur-Numaligarh underwater road tunnel

MUMBAI – The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on Saturday approved the construction of a four-lane access-controlled greenfield connectivity from Gohpur to Numaligarh in Assam, which includes a road-cum-rail tunnel under the Brahmaputra river. The project will be developed in an engineering, procurement, and construction mode at a total cost of INR 186.62 billion, an official release said.

This would be the first underwater road-cum-rail tunnel in India and the second such construction globally. The construction will address the connectivity between Numaligarh and Gohpur, which spans 240 kilometres and takes six hours to cover, having to pass through Numaligarh, the Kaziranga National park, and Biswanath Town, the release said.

The Cabinet also approved the construction of four-lane sections of Dhamasiya–Bitada or Movi and Nasarpore–Malotha in Gujarat through the hybrid annuity model, with a total project length of 107.67 kilometres and a total capital cost of INR 4.58 billion. The project is part of the National Highway-56 which starts at Nimbahera, Rajasthan, and traverses through Dahod in Gujarat, Alirajpur in Madhya Pradesh, and then re-enters Gujarat near Chhota Udepur District.

This project, planned as an upgrade to National Highway-56, will improve connectivity to tribal areas in Dahod, Chhota Udepur, Tapi and Bharuch, helping in economic growth and development of the region, the release said.

The Cabinet also approved the widening of National Highway-167 from Gudebellur to Mahabubnagar on the Hyderabad-Panaji Economic Corridor to the four-lane standard in Telangan, with a total project length of 80.01 kilometres and a total capital cost of INR 3.18 billion. The project will be developed through the hybrid annuity mode under the National Highway Original scheme.

Currently, the connectivity between Gudebellur to Mahabubnaagr on the existing National Highway-167 experiences a significant travel time delay due to very poor geometry and traffic congestion, as it passes through highly urbanised towns and villages, the release said. To address this, the project is proposed to be developed as a four-lane standard. The project will provide significant benefit to the Narayanpet and Mahabubnagar districts in the state of Telangana, enhancing the efficiency of freight movement, reducing logistics costs, and driving socio-economic growth in the region, it said.  End
