MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in key markets of Uttar Pradesh fell for the third straight day due to sluggish demand at higher rates, said traders. However, sales took place after mills slashed prices Friday, mainly after the news of allocation of additional quantity of sugar for exports.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh, cut prices by another INR 15-INR 20 per 100 kg as demand was subdued at existing levels, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. However, mills could sell some quantity after news of the government allowing export of 500,000 tonnes sugar to facilitate higher exports and help manage surplus availability in the country, Gupta said.

The additional export quantity will be made available to willing sugar mills only if they are able to export at least 70% of their allocated quantity by Jun. 30. The government had earlier allowed exports of 1.5 million tonne sugar for sugar season ending September. Out of which, only about 197,000 tonnes has been exported until Jan. 31. In addition, approximately 272,000 million tonnes sugar has been contracted for export by sugar mills as on Friday, according to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs.

In the past two to three days, prices have come down by INR 30-INR 35 per 100 kg from the peak levels reached so far during February. Sweetener rates in the state are INR 75 per 100 kg lower than what they were in January.

Yet, there is some possibility of prices rising in the coming days due to demand during Ramzan and Holi, Gupta said. In addition, sugar production in Uttar Pradesh in 2025-26 (Oct-Sept) will be lower than estimated amid lower sugarcane output, which will limit the fall in prices, he added.

Meanwhile, mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady due to sluggish demand, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. In the coming days, prices are likely to remain range-bound or rise by INR 5-INR 10 per 100 kg, Kuvadia said.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Down INR 15-INR 20 at INR 3,900-INR 4,025 per 100 kg in west Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 15-INR 20 at INR 3,900-INR 4,065 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,872-INR 4,012 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,820-INR 3,860 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1819 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were steady at 13.83 cents per pound.  End

US$1 = INR 90.63
