MUMBAI – Prices of chana fell, while prices of tur and masur were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Chana prices fell under the pressure of new rabi crop arrivals from some key states such as Maharashtra, they said. Tur prices were unchanged as arrivals of the new tur crop dropped temporarily, while masur prices were steady as low demand for the legume matched its supply, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 50 from Thursday to INR 5,550-INR 5,600 per 100 kg, said Raja Jain, a local trader. Prices were weighed down by a rise in arrivals of the new rabi crop, he said. Arrivals of the freshly harvested crop have begun from states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat, he said. Arrivals of the new crop from Madhya Pradesh will begin post Holi, which is in the first week of March, while new crop arrivals from Rajasthan will commence by the end of March.

While prices could fall further as arrivals rise, a steep decline in prices is unlikely, Jain said. "Farmers won't sell their crops at a rate which is too low, so prices won't slip too much," he said. The government's procurement of the legume at the minimum support price of INR 5,875 per 100 kg is also expected to support prices, he said. In Maharashtra, the government is likely to begin procuring chana in the first week of March, he said. In Gujarat, chana procurement has already begun.

Sowing of rabi crops has drawn to a close as of Monday, with chana acreage up 5.5% on year at 9.6 million hectares, according to the agriculture ministry.

Prices of chana in Delhi fell by INR 50 from the previous day to INR 5,650-INR 5,675 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 8,200-INR 8,250 per 100 kg, said Ashok Gupta, a local trader. Prices were steady due to a slight slowdown in arrivals of the new kharif crop, he said. However, robust new crop arrivals are expected to continue next week, which could weigh prices down, he said.

Though a fall in prices is expected, a steep decline is unlikely as stockists are expected to start buying in bulk soon, Gupta said. "Stockists are usually more active at lower prices," he said. Though the quality of the new arrivals has improved, the amount of high-quality arrivals is still low, he said. Lower availability of good quality tur is also likely to keep prices from falling further, he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 8,400-INR 8,500 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 5,700-INR 5,750 per 100 kg, Jain said. Prices were steady as low demand for the legume is on par with its supply, he said. Prices are expected to fall in the near term once arrivals of the new rabi crop begin, he said. In Madhya Pradesh, arrivals of the new crop will begin in 10–15 days, he said.

As of Monday, the final figures for masur acreage across the country for the ongoing rabi season was 1.8 million hectares, up 2.6% on year, according to the agriculture ministry.

Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, remained steady at INR 5,300-INR 5,850 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of the choti variety in Lalitpur also remained steady at INR 6,000-INR 7,200 per 100 kg.  End
