Telangana rabi acreage up 9% on yr at 7.05 mln acres as of Wed

MUMBAI – Framers in Telengana have sown rabi crops across 7.05 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares) as of Wednesday, up nearly 9% from 6.48 million acres a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The acreage so far has surpassed the state's normal rabi area of 6.87 million acres.
The area under paddy was up at 5.20 million acres from 5.0 million acres a year ago, the report showed. Maize acreage rose to 1.11 million acres from 696,539 acres a year ago. The acreage of jowar was 237,411 acres, up from 183,627 acres a year ago.
Chana acreage in the state fell to 179,738 acres from 218,847 acres a year ago, according to the report. The area under urad was down at 35,351 acres from 42,264 acres a year ago and that under moong fell to 6,739 acres from 7,536 acres. The total area under all rabi pulses was 228,667 acres, down from 278,034 acres a year ago.
The total area under all oilseeds so far fell to 221,104 acres from 261,250 acres a year ago, the report showed. Groundnut acreage fell to 186,743 from 232,755 acres.
Tobacco acreage was down at 10,903 acres from 13,195 acres a year ago, while sugarcane area rose to 15,720 acres from 6,650 acres a year ago, according to the report.
The water level in reservoirs across Telangana was 656.34 billion cubic metres as of Wednesday, compared with 578.13 billion cubic metres a year ago, according to the report. End
