MUMBAI – The water level in 166 key reservoirs of the country was 118.140 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, which is 64.36% of the total live storage capacity, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The water level was up 10.3% from a year ago and nearly 25% higher than the normal storage for the period, which is the average storage for the past 10 years, the data showed.
In the northern region, the water level in reservoirs was 11.96 billion cubic metres, which is over 60% of the total live storage capacity. In the same period last year, the water level was 32.5% of the live storage capacity. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.
In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 13.49 billion cubic metres, 62% of the total live storage capacity, against 58% in the corresponding period last year. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.
The water level in the western region was 28.7 billion cubic metres. This is over 75% of the total live storage capacity, against nearly 71% last year. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa.
In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 32.69 billion cubic metres as of Thursday. This is over 67% of the total live storage capacity, compared with nearly 61% a year ago.
The water level in the southern region was 31.31 billion cubic metres, nearly 57% of the total live storage capacity, the data showed. At this time last year, the water level in the region was over 57% of the total live storage capacity.
Of the 166 reservoirs in the country, 157 reported more than 80% of normal storage and nine were at 80% or below normal storage. Of these nine, three reported storage up to 50% of the normal.
India received an average of 0.3 millimetres of rainfall in the week ended Wednesday, 94% below the normal 5.5 millimetres for the period, according to the India Meteorological Department. End
