MUMBAI – Prices of maize and rice were steady and those of wheat showed mixed trend in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of wheat were steady in some markets while they fell in others as arrivals of the new rabi crop began from Gujarat, they said. Maize prices were unchanged as the market awaited arrivals of the freshly harvested rabi crop, while rice prices were steady due to low market activity, they said.

Price of WHEAT in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, was steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. The price of wheat at Vashi in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, fell by INR 50 from Tuesday to INR 2,800 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader.

Prices fell in the Vashi market as arrivals of the new crop began in small batches from Gujarat, Vora said. The quality of the new arrivals was lower than the fair average quality standard due to the presence of moisture, he said. However, early arrivals typically have higher moisture content and arrivals of good quality wheat are expected to begin after 15–20 days, he said.

Arrivals of the new crop from Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh are expected to begin from Mar. 1, while new arrivals from Rajasthan will commence after Mar. 20, he said. Arrivals of the freshly harvested crop in the north Indian belt, which includes, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, are likely to start in April, he said. Though the market expects a record production of wheat this year, a steep fall in prices is unlikely due to the government's active procurement of the grain at the minimum support price of INR 2,585 per 100 kg, he said.

Prices of MAIZE in Indore were steady at INR 1,715 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Demand and supply of the old stocks of maize were low, which kept prices steady, he said. The market is awaiting the arrival of the new rabi crop, which is expected to exert a downward pressure on prices, he said. Prices of maize at Davangere in Karnataka were steady at INR 1,700–INR 1,900 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals in the market were steady at 4,000 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), he said.

Prices of the main varieties of RICE remained unchanged in Vashi. The 1401 and 1121 varieties of basmati rice were steady at INR 8,000-INR 8,200 per 100 kg and INR 8,400-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, respectively, because of the lack of fresh cues, Vora said. Prices of basmati rice were largely unchanged due to tepid market activity, he said.

The demand for basmati rice before and during Ramzan decreases significantly as consumption shifts to other commodities such as dry fruits and pulses, Vora said. "Demand for basmati rice, especially from West Asian countries, is usually low during Ramzan," he said. Additionally, many countries have a steady supply due to Pakistan's aggressive exports of the grain, he said. "Last year, Pakistan took advantage of the rise in Indian rice prices and dumped their basmati rice everywhere, so now everyone has a good supply," he said.

Prices of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety, were also steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said Ravi Shankar, a local trader. Prices are likely to remain unchanged in the near term due to seasonally low demand, he said.  End
