Maharashtra rabi acreage up 4% on year at 6.73 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – Rabi crops in Maharashtra were sown across 6.73 million hectares as of Monday, up over 4% from 6.46 million hectares covered in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture ministry. The state's normal rabi acreage, which is the average area sown during the last five years, is 5.78 million hectares.

 

The area sown under wheat in the state rose to 1.51 million hectares from 1.31 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. Jowar acreage slipped to 1.40 million hectares from 1.54 million hectares last year, while that of maize was up at 655,730 hectares from 484,011 hectares a year ago.

 

Chana acreage was 2.90 million hectares, up from 2.89 million hectares sown a year ago, according to the report. The total acreage under all rabi pulses was up at 3.08 million hectares from 3.05 million hectares last year.

 

The total area sown under all oilseeds so far was down at 62,505 hectares from 68,814 hectares sown in the previous year, the report showed. Safflower acreage fell to 30,907 hectares from 34,657 hectares a year ago.

 

Rabi crops in the state are sown after the southwest monsoon and harvested between January and April. Besides chana, other major rabi crops grown in the state are wheat, jowar, barley, oats, mustard, and peas.

 

The water level in dams across Maharashtra was 72.4% of the live storage capacity as of Wednesday, compared with 65.2% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department.  End
